Elwood Curtis’ college dream crashes on the side of a two-lane highway in Florida. Carrying the burden of an innocent mistake, he was sentenced to the underworld of Nickel Academy, a brutal penitentiary sunk in the Jim Crow South. She meets another guard, the all-seeing Turner. Two black teenagers form an alliance: Turner shares basic survival tips, and Elwood adheres to his optimistic view of the world. Against the background of the growing Civil Rights Movement, the existence of Ellwood and Turner seems a far cry from the brilliant oratory of the Reverend Martin Luther King. Despite Nickel’s brutality, Elwood tries to maintain his humanity, instilling a new perspective on Turner.
