Sonic, Knuckles and Tails once again face a powerful new enemy, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before. Team Sonic must find an unlikely alliance with their abilities. The filmmakers of the previous films have cited both Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2001) and Shadow the Hedgehog (2005) as inspiration for the solo gameplay. The film also draws inspiration from narrative elements from the Saturday morning animated television series Sonic the Hedgehog (1993).
